Januari’s Biden/Harris Scorecard

Priorities for Marylanders

Increased Funding for Families

  • Passed the Inflation Reduction Act to lower costs for families, combat the climate crisis, reduce the deficit, and finally make the largest corporations pay their fair share.

  • Provided debt relief of up to $20,000 for Americans earning less than $125,000 per year who had Pell Grants in college, and up to $10,000 for all other borrowers below that income threshold. More than 40 million borrowers stand to benefit from this action, and about 20 million would see their debt entirely wiped out - and nearly 90% of this relief will go to borrowers earning less than $75,000 per year.

  • Took action to lower the cost of health care for millions of Americans. Right now, four out of five people who sign up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act can find health care coverage for $10 a month or less and millions of Americans on Obamacare are saving an average of $800 a year.

Investments in Workforce Development, Entrepreneurship, and Labor Rights

  • Established a task force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment which mobilizes the federal government's policies, programs, and practices to empower workers to organize and successfully bargain with their employers.

  • Awarded Record-Breaking $178 Billion in Federal Procurement Opportunities to Small Businesses.

  • Supported the creation of 11 million jobs ensuring record low unemployment rates amongst Black and Hispanic Americans as well as people with disabilities.

Strengthening of Public Education

  • Delivered the Improving Student Achievement Agenda for 2024 accelerating academic performance for every child in school.

  • Funded a successful vaccination campaign through The American Rescue Plan to safely re-open schools for in-person learning helping 200,000 childcare providers keep their doors open and deliver relief to American families.

  • Prioritized clean school infrastructure to upgrade our public schools with modern, clean, energy-efficient facilities and transportation.

Access to Fair and Affordable Housing for All

  • Established a task force to reduce homeownership appraisal bias.

  • Awarded $85 million in grant funding for the Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing (PRO Housing) program. PRO Housing aims to identify and remove barriers to affordable housing production and preservation, and lower housing costs.

  • Established the Affordable Connectivity Program to provide lower-cost or free high-speed internet for over 16 million households.

Maintaining our Democracy and Civil Rights

  • Passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act requiring young people ages 18 to 21 to undergo enhanced background checks; narrowing the "boyfriend loophole" to keep guns out of the hands of convicted dating partners; funding crisis interventions, including extreme risk protection order ("red flag") laws.

  • Signed an Executive Order to protect access to reproductive health care and safeguard patient privacy and sensitive health information.

  • Passed the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act making lynching a federal crime.
